The first two chapters quickly establish a slightly sinister atmosphere in the days leading up to the disaster. Matt is uneasy but cannot say why, and Miranda soon becomes anxious too. She admits that she does not know the 'ending' or the 'beginning' but that she somehow knows that something big is going to happen. These feelings of unease and anxiety foreshadow the disaster, as well as all the terrible effects that will be felt for a long time afterwards.
