Dows Miranda seem at peace with the idea of dying
Although Miranda had worried earlier in the story that she could not sacrifice for her brother if needed, she proves herself wrong at the end of the book. She realizes that her mother is right, and that Jonny does have the best chance of all of them. She agrees that he should have more food, and when the food begins to run out she decides to sacrifice her life for his. She is brave enough to do this, and kind enough to do it in a way that will not make her mother suffer, as Megan's mother did.
