The power of love to overcome obstacles is a primary focus of the novel, as well. Catherine Maurice learns her daughter is autistic, and immediately begins seeking resolution to the problem. It is clear from her writings that she is on a mission to save her daughter, without regard to cost or effort required. Catherine and her husband, Marc, both begin to do whatever they can to help their daughter, from lengthy research to long hours of therapy to prayer to consultation with many doctors. Their efforts lead them to examine their own opinions and to reevaluate everything in their lives.
