Who is Slats from Legends of the Fall and what is their importance?

Slats is the man who grabs Sarah at Sonia's graduation dinner. When Nordstrom hits him, Slats threatens him. Slats pretends to be Sarah's husband, which enables him to try to extort money from sympathetic rich men. He backs off from his extortion plan after Nordstrom apologizes and buys him drugs.
