The Tutsis serve as main antagonist in the novel, Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust. The holocaust was the result of ethnic rivalry between the extremist Hutus and their victims, the Tutsis. The genocide took the lives of nearly a million Tutsi people including the majority of Immaculee's family. Because of the killing of Tutsis, and being a Tutsi herself, immaculee was forced into hiding during the genocide.
