Strange Series of Marks on the Wall

These strange marks on the wall of both the attic of the African barn, the walls of Thomas’ office and his ledger book represent his mental disorder. He writes the symbols of the chemical compounds that he had gleaned from Alice’s research over and over again in an obsessive manner when his mental illness was at its peak. Virgil Stanhope, one of the original detectives at the scene of Neevie’s murder noticed the strange markings but was encouraged by the other detective at the time not to pursue what the strange marks might mean.
