The blue scarf represents Jenna’s mother. It is one of the few things that Jenna has that was her mother’s. It angers Jenna’s grandmother when Jenna wears this scarf because it reminds her of Alice. Jenna wears it to spite her grandmother. It is this scarf that Jenna gives to Serenity when she tells Serenity she wants help finding her mother. Serenity has a dream about the scarf in which she sees it wrapped around the neck of a woman who is being protected by an elephant. The reader later learns that Alice wrapped a blue scarf around her neck to hide the bruises that Thomas caused when he tried to choke her.
