The paintings in the exhibition at Garret's Lane Christine sees at the end of the novel are a symbol of Zachary's imperfections, which she is finally recalling for the first time since his death. Up to this point, she had been concerned that she would not be able to create her own art without his unwavering support and encouragement, but after she begins to see him "with a new realism" (270), she determines that her work succeeds on its own merits. She is then able to return home and unlock her studio.
