Why does Stevie dismiss the compliment he receives on his story in Chapter 7?

Ironically, Stevie doesn't take the compliment from the editor as seriously as he normally would because he is distracted by the blackmailing and the fixing of the game. Stevie and Susan Carol are using their investigative reporting skills to solve the mystery of what's going on.
