What is ironic about the taped confession in Chapter 18?

Susan Carol's calmness in the hotel room suggests she is taping the conversation, so when Chip gets the men to explain why they're blackmailing him, Susan Carol is getting the whole story as a recording. Ironically, it is Steve Jurgenson, the man they thought was the blackmailer, who saves Stevie and Susan Carol.
