One of the primary themes that runs throughout the novel is growing up and coming of age. In some way, each of the characters learns lessons about growing up and dealing with responsibilities in life. Primarily, Rose's sentencing for murdering the queen is the spark that forces Rose to come of age and deal with some very adult situations. First, Rose has to find out who the real murderer of the queen is while she is on the run with her ex-boyfriend and lover, Dimitri.
