Selby uses the third-person perspective, but generally from the perspective of individuals such as Tralala and Harry. From their perspective, the reader can see these characters have had a hard life and though they may not be likable where their behaviour is more condemning of society than it is of them as an individual. While the others characters manipulate and take advantage of their plights, their feelings towards people become increasing numb, until they can no longer hold back their true selves.
