Lame Deer's great-grandfather was killed by mistake because he had been promised one last buffalo hunt with his tribe. The government forgot to inform those watching over the land that the tribe was free to be there and so a gun fight broke out and Chief Lame Deer was killed along with his second chief, Iron Star.
