The main conflict in the novel stems from Clifford's war injury, and his inability to have sexual relations. Constance approaches the problem by trying to find new ways to connect both emotionally and intellectually. Clifford, however, has no interest in forging a new kind of relationship and effectively shuts his wife out. For Connie, this disconnect is unbearable, leading her to look for love and affection elsewhere.
