The tone of the novel is generally unadorned and clipped. Few characters have time for poetry, since the investigation develops at such a rapid pace. This overall reserved tone, however, allows the brief moments of eloquence to shine. For example, Elvis Cole makes several poignant observations about the nature of navigation, the possibility of redemption, and the necessity of love. These observations are notable only because they are surrounded on all sides by voices dealing in evidence, facts, and problem-solving.
