What does lifting represent?

Genetic editing—or ‘lifting’ as it is called in the world of the novel—symbolizes the effects of technology on society and personal identity. Over the course of the novel, it becomes clear that many parents choose to have their children genetically modified to supposedly make them more intelligent. Children such as Rick, who have not been ‘lifted,’ are often viewed as inferior.
