Klara is the novel’s sole narrator and point-of-view character. Klara narrates the novel in the first person and the past tense. The story and the world of the novel are thereby developed through Klara’s experiences, thoughts, and perceptions. Notably, one of Klara’s character traits is that she is highly observant. This fact is not only a relevant plot point, but also a convenient enablement of Klara’s abilities as an observer/narrator. Additionally, Klara has relatively little knowledge about the world at the beginning of the novel, so the reader learns about the world of the story along with Klara herself. Also notable is the fact that Klara’s perspective is very human in many ways, from her emotional attachments to her occasional penchant for superstition.
