There are many references to sight and seeing in this novel. These references form a motif to present the argument that things are often not as they appear. Beauvoir, for instance, believes that when Benedict protected Gamache as the farmhouse collapsed, it caused Gamache to develop emotional blindness in regard to Benedict.
