Why does Marlowe agree to take part in the pen sale in Chapter 17?

Marlowe’s first instinct is to refuse to take part in the deal, but he talks himself into doing it by telling himself that he will be helping the man out, and that he will be able to use the money that he pockets from the deal to buy extra rations for his unit
