In Chapter One, Lieutenant Peter Marlowe sees a well dressed man standing in the prison yard. How is this man visibly different from the other prisoners?

Although all of the other men in the yard, including officers, are dressed in filthy tattered rags and look emaciated and ill, the man Marlowe sees through the window is wearing a clean shirt, creased pants, polished shoes and appears well-fed and healthy.
