Mare describes feeling cold throughout her imprisonment. Whitefire palace makes her shiver, and when she feels warm physically, Maven’s voice brings a return of the iciness. She only feels warmth in her anger during her captivity. In contrast, the Piedmont base is hot, even on rainy days. The contrast between cold and heat represents the contrasting feelings of isolation and despair Mare holds as a prisoner, and the empowerment and hopefulness for change she feels among other Reds.
