Mare's Brand

In the previous novel, Maven burns an “M” into Mare’s collarbone. In King’s Cage, the brand represents his control over Mare and his desire for ownership. To Mare, however, the M represents more than his ownership – instead, the M stands for “monster” and “murder” as much as his name.
