Why does Dana time travel?

Dana is spontaneously sent back in time. There's no machine, no attempts.... it just happens and is accompanied by sickness. Over time, it becomes apparent that her trips back in tme coincide with danger to a specific ancestor named Rufus. If Rufus isn't kept alived..... Dana can never be born.
