Although the two girls are very alike, their pasts have also had an effect on their thoughts and ideals. Dana is a modern, black woman.... a respected author. She is not submissive, and although, she isn't surprised by life as a slave..... she is eventually drawn into it emotionally.

Alice becomes Dana's best friend. The two women are very alike.... almost like sisters. They both want to escape, they are each repulsed by Rufus' attentions. Unfortunately, Alice eventually becomes embittered..... and in the end, she takes her own life.
