In Kindred, the character Rufus Weylin and his father Tom Weylin are compared. Rufus, though the reader would like him to be a better man...maybe due to Dana's influence, is still a product of his times and his culture. The way that he treats his mother is proof enough. And, though he stays his hand where Alice is concerned, he still treats her like an inferior to himself.
