In Kindred, the author has Kevin and Dana stranded for varying lengths of time in the past. The reason that the author did this was that she felt that Kevin needed that time period to fully come to terms with his flawed thinking and opinions. Because his ethnic background did not allow for any frame of reference for what happened to him, it takes him longer to come to terms with the reality of the situation.
