Harry Connick Jr., Jr., the fish that Mad named, is symbolic of survival. Mad refers to Harry Connick Jr., Jr. as the fish who will not quit since he is the only goldfish who survived the winter. The goldfish is always there, swimming under the bridge. He is a constant reminder of the power of perseverance. In this way, the goldfish is also symbolic of Mad, and of her fight to survive. No matter how bad things get or how scary her home situation is, she keeps on trying. She won't leave Jamma behind, and she won't give up on her new family either. Despite all she has gone through, like losing her parents at such a young age, Mad is tough. She is a survivor and a champion of life. She keeps on fighting for her right to be happy no matter what comes her way.
