The Port-O-Sans is a symbol of rebirth. This symbol is found in the short story “A Very Tight Place.” Grunwald locks Curtis in this Port-O-Sans believing that Curtis will die there. King describes the depository portion of the toilet as “a dark womb half-filled with rotting shit” (345). Curtis crawls into this because he sees a glimmer of light from a seam in the tank. He is eventually “reborn” when he uses Betsy’s ID tag to unscrew the bolts, giving him space to squeeze out of the toilet/womb.
