King enjoys using language to convey double meanings and jokes relative to his subject matter. Consider the quote from “Graduation Afternoon:” “She will think of Patsy Cline or Skeeter Davis and in a little while she may be able to teach what is left of her eyes not to look” (184). King refers to what is left of Janice’s eyes, referring to the burns to her retinas because she watched the atomic blast from its start. He also states that she will teach her eyes not to look, a statement that refers not only to her actual vision, but also to the aspirations she had for her future.
