July, July
Which character dodged the draft in the novel, July, July?
.
.
Billy McMann, a draft dodger, positions the debate over the Vietnam War, specifically, the question of whether to fight or run, in the center of the novel’s exploration of the psyche of the Class of 1969. 18 days after graduating from Darton Hall, Billy is served his draft notice, and he is on a flight to Winnipeg. In rejecting the war, in accepting the life of a draft dodger, Billy turns his back on his family, his culture, his home, and most particularly Dorothy Stier, the woman he loved.
