At the beginning of the play, Brutus is a staunch and loyal friend to Julius. They like one another and there is a bond of trust that can be seen between them. As Julius ascends into his reign, Brutus begins to develop a deep and abiding sense of patriotism and he loves his country, even more than he loves Caesar. His final evolution is when he chooses the good of the state (and himself) over the life of his friend.
