The language is modern English. Though the authors refer to various languages - Greek and Latin, for example - the entire work is presented in
English. There prose flows well and is easy to read. Though the story line may be somewhat dry in the beginning, the reader is quickly caught up in the main storyline - the life of Julian as he moves from child to ruler of the Roman Empire. There are some tedious descriptions, particularly of places and buildings in Athens. The majority of the battle details have been omitted with only brief descriptions of those events. Julian makes notes to include them as part of his memoir, but doesn't go into detail in the writing itself.
