Otto Lidenbrock is a professor of mineralogy at Johannaeum in Hamburg, Germany. He is fifty-years-old, well-respected, and considered a savant, for he is knowledgeable in many areas beside mineralogy. Otto is a scientist and empiricist, and he is critical of science because he believes that theories prevent man from making further discoveries. When Axel contends that science generally supports the theory that the center of the earth is burning hot, Otto dismisses his view because no one has been to the center of the earth to see it. He is rational, intelligent, and over time we come to see that he is also a caring, concerned uncle.
