Slocum was greeted with Samoan hospitality which he appreciated. However, the strict adherence to Samoan customs and ritual were daunting to Slocum which made the sailor work hard not to offend anyone during his stay. Slocum attempted to repay the kindnesses shown to him by holding a reception aboard the Spray. Slocum claims that the effort was difficult and while it was fine, it was not at all comparable to the reception given to Slocum by the island's King.
