The Spray anchored at Jamestown in early April. Slocum went immediately to pay his respects to the island's governor, Sir R.A. Sterndale. Sterndale invited Slocum to stay at the governor's mansion, Plantation House. During his time at Plantation House, Slocum was treated like a prince. Slocum had heard from locals that the house was haunted. Sterndale said he hoped Slocum would have the opportunity to experience the presence of some ghosts.
