In the Scarlet Deluge why did Lieutenant Stranger reveal his negative side

Lieutenant Stranger has, until now, been presented in a positive manner. By revealing his negative side in this section, the author creates a more believeable British soldier. Why is this dual nature necessary in this section of the novel?

Lieutenant Stranger, like other British officers, has positive traits. Johnny likes him. The fact that he snubs Johnny outside of the comfort zone, meaning he refuses to acknowledge him while among his peers, reminds us (and Johnny) that he IS a British soldier, and as such, not to be liked or admired. Regardless of the riding lessons, Johnny has no reason to like or trust him..... he remains the enemy to Johnny's cause.
