The Miltonic sonnet is similar to the Petrarchan and Shakespearean sonnets. Milton, like Shakespeare, chose to focus on one major theme per sonnet. Unlike Shakespeare, Milton wrote about of politics, intellectual pursuits, and spirituality rather than love. Milton structured each of his poems with the same rhyme scheme, patterned ABBAABBACDECDE.
