Who is Argantes from Jerusalem Delivered and what is their importance?

Argantes is Aladine's second in command. He is famous for challenging and defeating Christian knights in single combat. He almost kills Tancred in combat, which spells certain doom for the Christians. Tancred, however, rises from his sickbed, which serves to rally the Christians. Tancred kills Argantes, and saves the day.
