Jane Eyre What is the significance of the chestnut tree splitting in Jane Eyre? Asked by bookragstutor on 28 Nov 08:47 Last updated by anonymous on 22 Jan 18:16
The chestnut tree happens to be the tree that Rochester proposed to Jane under. The very next day, or later that evening, lightning strikes it and splits it in half. It is not only forshadowing, but it seems an ill omen to Jane.
