Jackself
What is the main setting in the poetry collection, Jackself?
.
.
Lamanby is the name of Jackself’s house. Lamanby’s construction is described in the first poem in the collection, “The House that Jack Built.” Located in a small village in the rural English countryside near the coast, the house is a farmhouse situated on a large plot of land. Surrounding the house is a small wooded forest. Not much information is provided regarding the inside of the house other than the attic loft, which serves as the setting for several poems, including “The Lofts,” “An Age,” and “Jack O’Bedlam.” The loft of Lamanby is dusty and filled with skeletons of past selves, and Jackself goes up into the loft sometimes to stare out the window at the birds. Other than its proximity to the school and other neighboring houses, no specific descriptions are provided of Lamanby’s location in the village or the quality of the village itself.
