Why does Mary go to the home of Mary Britten in Chapter 77?

Back in London, Mary's suspicions about her sister's condition and who she became pregnant by are solidified. Not knowing what to do in order to avoid scandal, Mary leaves the house and goes to Mrs. Britten's home; there, she obtains abortion pills.
