What does Jack do on Great Queen Street in Chapter 2? Who is he mistaken for?

Jack comes marching up to Great Queen Street to Number 27, where he knocks at the door. Mercy is the kitchen maid next door, and appears at the parlor window; she imagines that Jack has come to interview with Mrs. Halfstairs for the position of footman at her home.
