Why was Atlas homeless as a teen?

Atlas's mother was on her third marriage by the time he was 12. The next four years were terrible. Either his mother or her husband, Tim, were always angry at him, and he could never do anything right. Eventually, they kicked him out of the house even though he was still in high school. He had a friend he could live with for three months, then he became homeless.
