When Ishi first awakens in the saldu village, he notices the smell of the slaughterhouse and dogs. To him, the smells are offensive. When he sees that he is surrounded by saldu with their guns pointed at him, he is convinced that he will be shot or hanged. Later, he is struck by the rude behavior of all of the saldu who squeeze into the jail in order to stare at him. From his point of view, the village stinks and the saldu have no manners.
