When spring arrives, Ishi awakens from his long sleep and is ready to approach life again. He notices the smells of spring and the evidence of the world renewing itself. He evaluates the state in which he has been living and realizes that it is insufficient. He washes in the creek, a symbol of rebirth, and eats and drinks in order to strengthen his body. Ishi also sets out with a goal for first time since Mother's death. He plans to search the Yahi lands for evidence of his loved ones' spirits. All of this brings Ishi back to life.
