Ishi is surprised by the Sheriff's actions because he has always associated the saldu with terrible stories and experiences. The saldu that he is familiar with are loud, violent, and, rude. He believes that they all mean to do harm to him, but the Sheriff speaks quietly, yet with authority. He is kind to Ishi, addressing his physical needs but also treating him like a fellow man. He chases all of the onlookers away and then shares a cigar with Ishi. He tries to find someone who can communicate with Ishi, and eventually Ishi realizes that the Sheriff is trying to help him rather than harm him.
