what is the relationship between nature and american identity?

I'm not an expert on American identity but certainly nature fits in with a sense of independence and freedom that seems to fill American popular culture. The idea of the lone cowboy in the elements fending for himself is perpetuated in Clint Eastwood movies and stories of survival.
