What did you learn about Chris in the first chapter?

In the first chapter, we learn that Chris (Alex) has arrived in Alaska and is planning to hitchhike his way to a remote spot where he will spend several months living of the land. We learn that he is traveling alone, that he is unprepared, and that even when warned by Jim Gallien (the man who picked him up), Chris refuses to change his mind about his plans.
