The novel’s ambiguous ending symbolizes the uncertainty of the future and of one’s own feelings. By the end of the novel, the narrator has quit her job, in part because she believes that Adriaan will choose his wife over her. However, when Adriaan then reaffirms his love for the narrator, the narrator is unsure whether she will leave The Hague or whether she will remain there with Adriaan.
