Loyalty and deception are recurring ideas in the book. The loyalty that vampires are supposed to have for their makers is called into question when Claudia rises up against Lestat. Instead of powerful dedication she should feel for Lestat as her maker, she chooses deception. Then, as the Paris vampires seek justice for Lestat, as a fulfillment of old rules, Armand claims he is powerless to stop the brutality they are going to take against Claudia. It is evident, however, that Armand is being deceitful to Louis in order to force his hand in companionship that Armand is desperate for.
